Marie Benson

12 July 1952 - 1 April 2005
Marie Benson
Marie Elizabeth Benson was born in the USA, and first visited South Africa in 1989. She came here to live the following year. Since then she met and inspired (and was inspired by) many people from different communities. Most recently, she served women in prison through HeartWork. Marie developed pulmonary fibrosis, an untreatable lung disease that involves scarring of the lung tissue, but even being on an oxygen machine could not keep her from visiting her friends in prison. She died quietly, in the company of friends, on 1 April 2005, at the Houghton facility of the Hospice Association of the Witwatersrand. Her funeral was held at St Catherine's Church, Bramley, at 11:30am Thursday 7 April 2005, and was conducted by the Rev. Lynda Wyngaard.
