Represented EP in rugby in 1938, a promising career cut short by the war in which he served with distinction. He was captured to become a prisoner of war in Italy and managed to escape to spend close to eighteen months on the loose before making his way back through enemy lines. His daring earned hin the affectionate name of Capitano Danielli amongst the peasants who succoured him. He was a businessman and farmer, and around 1950 he received 'the call' to become a lay preacher.

All Watson brothers (Gavin, Ronnie, Valence, Daniel) were born on a farm near Somerset East, Eastern Cape.
