Gary left Germiston High whilst in matric in April 1976 (apparently a long story). He completed portions of a technical tertiary education at OFS Tech much later. He did his army training in 1977 at 7 SAI, Bourkes Luck Intake.
He has owned a successful specialist engineering Recruitment Company since 1998 that does a lot of international placements in all engineering disciplines, with the emphasis on Civil Engineering for construction projects around the world. He frequently travels to the UK, UAE, and the Far East.
Socially, he played squash at 1st league and provincial level for many years but now has re-focused on playing doubles. Doubles squash is one of the fastest-growing sports since the inception of a Masters Inter-Provincial Tournament held every year, attracting over 500 participants. With his regular partner, they are ranked amongst the top three doubles parings in the country at Masters level.
Gary also focused on fine tuning his Guitar playing ability following getting divorced, and plays in two different bands on a freelance basis, but rather enjoys playing around a braai fire or any other group gathering.
