Peter studied Mining Engineering at Wits University. He is married to Kylie, and he has two children - Sarah and Rayner (with his first wife, Melanie). Peter and his family left South Africa in 1991 and returned in 2000 (for Peter to run the South African coal operations for Xstrata, living in Houghton), having lived in Indonesia (Borneo) for 4 years, Australia for 1 year, Brazil (2 years), and Colombia (2 years). While in Johannesburg, Peter was a member of the Executive Council of the Chamber of Mines. In 2006, Peter was transferred to Sydney where, as CEO of Xstrata Coal, he was responsible for all of its operations (as the world's largest exporter of power station coal, producing 90 Mtpa from about 30 mines).
The Freyberg family moved to Sydney in 2006, although Rayner was finishing off matric at St John's in Johannesburg. Sarah did her schooling at St Mary's in Johannesburg, and attended university in Sydney.
At the end of 2018, Peter was appointed as head of Glencore's industrial mining assets. Itīs a new position, based in Switzerland, with responsibility for all of Glencoreīs industrial mining.
